What Causes Alcohol Poisoning

You have often seen people drink heavily in pubs, hotels, and night clubs, bars or any other such places. They drink to the point where there remain no need to consume any other food as they fully boozed out. In that case the alcohol or liquor comes in reaction with the acidic matters present in the stomach area and cause poisoning. This is called the alcohol poisoning in general.

This is often called as the alcohol dependant disease of the body as it is caused due to alcoholism. From time immemorial alcohol and depression have gone hand in hand. There are innumerable instances from the pages of history where illustrated personalities took to alcohol following regular bouts of depression. Taking to alcohol has almost become a standard way of expressing grief, anxiety and unhappiness especially by the males and this trend still continues with all its glory.

Alcohol brings in a feeling of relaxation and takes the individual away from the grim realities of life, to a world of illusion. People experiencing lack of sleep due to certain mental or physical conditions take to alcohol as it helps them in getting sleep. Boys in their teens almost idealize the image of destroying oneself with a glass of spirit in hand. A person of this kind, in their opinion is a real man. The heroes in the movies also subscribe to this view. Hence at the sight of the slightest problem they take resolve in the most faithful friend of a “MAN”- a glass of spirit.

Linking Alcohol to Depression

Many studies have been done to understand the connection between alcohol and depression. Not only is alcohol a depressant of the nervous system, recent research indicates that alcohol leads to depression. For those who already haven been diagnosed with depression or mental health disorders there are several reasons to avoid or strictly limit its consumption. For the rest, it is wise to be aware of drinking habits and moods to try to avoid a slide into depression.

A study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry in 2009 reported that problems with alcohol might lead to depression. The report was based on a study performed in New Zealand over 25 years following the same segment of the population. The researchers found that at all ages, a higher incidence of problems with the substance was correlated with a higher incidence of major depressive disorder or other mental health problems. Those with drinking problems or dependence were 1.9 times as likely to have depressive disorder. Although the underlying reasons are not fully understood, researchers believe it could be a combination of genetic processes and a more stressful life that is generally associated with substance dependency problems.
