Here’s something you might not know about alcohol and depression. One doesn’t necessarily cause the other and you can have one without the other. However, there is one very interesting part to the alcohol and depression topic, the fact that most alcoholics aren’t honest with their doctors or therapists. I know, I’m a recovering alcoholic.

Depression is often over diagnosed by therapist who hear all their woes and depressive behaviors of their alcoholic patients. Patients who forget to mention they’re drinking a fifth of scotch a day. Not to mention that alcohol is a depressant. The most amazing part about this, is denial plays such a huge part in the disease of alcoholism, that few alcoholics even realize they’re omitting this important information. It may seem hard to imagine, but few alcoholics or addicts are totally honest with anyone. There’s a saying that goes, “how do you know an addict is lying? Their lips are moving.” With that said, we’re only as sick as our secrets. Which is something I found out the hard way. When I truly got honest with myself and someone else, the real miracle of recovery happened.

A disease is an abnormal condition that has a negative effect on a bodies functions causing them to be impaired. It will have specific signs and symptoms that are associated with it. Alcoholism meets those standards.

Alcoholism can be considered an obsession of the mind that brings about a physical need to drink. It isn’t a symptom of something else like another disease, it is its own disease. The condition is not normal and it has a negative effect on the body that can and does get worse over time. The symptoms and signs of the disease are consistent and specific. Alcoholism is an involuntary controlling disability that puts one afflicted with it at a disadvantage.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant which means that it effects the brain and spinal cord where the neurological system resides.
