how do you get over depression without therapy, drugs, alcohol or other degrading practices?
enumployed college graduate who’s too unmotivated to begin grad school without ever having worked a practical job in my field, too frustrated working out-of-industry, still hopelessly looking for a practical job, non-existent love-life, little communication with family and friends and several financial debts, credit cards, school loans, etc..how do I help this friend of mine who doesnt want therapy?

Don’t resort to drugs or alcohol, that’s definitely not the way to go.
But, in a case like this, your friend may find therapy helpful. But if they refuse this, perhaps you should find something that motivates him and start from there.
Therapy is more degrading than resorting to Yahoo Answers?? Obviously you can’t fix yourself, so get help.
Well I do not consider therapy and getting help ‘degrading’ at all. You say ‘my’ and then say it is a friend of yours, which is confusing.
Anyway, life is tough and we all need help sometimes dealing with the stress and depression that it can cause.
Somepeople are born with chemical imbalances and need to take medication. This does not make them ‘crazy’ or ‘less of a person’. just like a diabetic is born needing insulin, many people are born needing other medication to get on an even keel.
A psychiatrict is a medical doctor as well and can assess what is going on and prescribe something to help get through the anxiety and depression, if it is needed.
Alcohol is a depressant and will make you feel worse overall–requiring you to drink more and more. the same with street drugs.
You need support and to talk out your worries and concerns–set up some goals and ways in which to tackle them.
it’s one step at a time with depression.
One day at a time.
You deserve it.
Work (even not in the field) will help with debts > it will help the person with feeling better while on the top of finances while still looking for job in the field > while having money won’t be so frustrated and start going out > possibly find somebody he/she likes > family & friend will be happy to be around happy person.
There’s no therapy for that – just action!!! It’s like with puzzles – you have to start, so they picture you want slowly emerges out of nothing. He/she has the necessary bits – just doesn’t want to put them together. Sometimes people look for excuses to justify their inaction just because they’re fine with being miserable.
Some people turn to religion.
