Is it ok to take wellburtin while being an alcoholic?
My boyfriends doctor prescribed him wellburtin for depression knowing he is an alcholic. I am doing my research on it the medicine and it says that if he takes it with alcohol it can cause seizures. Any ideas why the doctor would do this?

maybe the patient didnt disclose that he drinks.
It’s not good to drink heavy with medicine. It is also up to the patient to read all the info provided, upon receiving the medicine, and to use their common sense.
First, is the doctor that prescribed the wellbutrin and MD or a psychiatrist? Typically someone taking an antidepressant such as wellbutrin should not drink. He is already depressed and alcohol is a depressant. If the doctor knows he is an alcholic I would hope he or she would get your boyfriend into a treatment program for alcoholism and then prescribe an antidepressant. I would get a second opinion from a psychiatrist, not an MD.
Are you sure that the doctor in question knows his problem. Anyone taking med’s for depression shouldn’t do any other drugs.
the depression is all in his head and based on his outlook and philosophies. the alcoholism is based on him being a sensation-seeker and not having a fulfilling life that can be enjoyed sober.
the pills won’t help.
and yes its ok to take wellbutrin with alcohol, seizure is unlikely, but he will act like an idiot and get drunk real quick.
NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!! NO!!
No one of us is a medical doctor. But I am sure he and others told him not to drink alcohol while taking it.
Why the He-ll would you ask here. The fact that you do tells us how much this is made up and just a game. First, if he had been prescribed this medication the doctor would have told him not to drink alcohol. The doctor would have also told him not to drink alcohol at all as it may be a cause in contributing to his depression. Secondly, the pharmacy staff would have instructed the person picking up this med to not drink alcohol with it. Thirdly, common sense of a mature and reasonably Intelligent person would have figured that mixing alcohol and medications is a bad idea. Finally. this question needs to be posted in the health section and not here.
This question and ones like is are far to old and worn out on yahoo answers it is sadly pitiful.
It is possible that Wellbutrin may increase the effects of alcohol, whether by increasing the symptoms of depression or affecting motor skills. Therefore, many healthcare providers recommend that people taking Wellbutrin drink only light-to-moderate amounts of alcohol. Also, if a person chooses to drink while on Wellbutrin, he or she should drink only after he or she understands the effects Wellbutrin has on his or her body. Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider about Wellbutrin and alcohol.

Just one source.
Call the doctor and ask him/her for details and course of action while using this med.
FYI to the above
A psychiatrist is also an MD.
