Alcohol detox at home can be done, but never by yourself. There must be medical oversight because everyone’s withdrawal symptoms are different and unknown until they are into the process itself. In-home detox is not set up to handle patients who are at risk for seizures or strokes. Most programs will only allow low-risk, relatively healthy patients to attempt detox at home.

All patients are overseen by medical staff. Someone is always at the patient’s home during the detox process, which can last anywhere from three to seven days. Depending on the home detox program, the person who stays with the recovering alcoholic could be a friend or family member, with the medical personnel making daily visits and always available by phone. Other detox programs have the medical personnel staying at your home.

Home detox is much less expensive than in-patient detox. Rather than paying for your share of a stay in a treatment facility as well as keep your home operating, you’re just paying for your home, like normal.

Each person is evaluated for their suitability for in-home detox from alcohol before this program starts. There are usually questionnaires and/or interviews. At that point the addict’s suitability for in-home detox from alcohol will be determined. A plan for healthy, safe and effective detox will be prepared and discussed with the patient.

There are many products on the internet promising virtual “detox in a box” or “all-natural detox at home”. However, none of these are recommended by physicians. In fact, they’re primarily set up to help people using drugs or alcohol pass drug screening by employers and others. If you can find these products on the internet, don’t you think they employers can, too?

In-home alcohol detoxification can also be used before an inpatient or outpatient treatment program begins. When the individual arrives at the treatment facility, the recovery phase can begin straightaway.

During the in-home alcohol detox, a medical professional, usually a nurse, will arrive at your house. They usually wear street clothes, so as far as your neighbors are concerned, you just have a friend visiting. The medical expert will have already seen your evaluation and will have come prepared to treat you according to your special needs.

Medications are administered, vital signs checked, and the detoxification process has begun. For the detox to be most effective, it must be followed up by recovery. Many of the medical staff who guide the recovering alcoholic through the home detox process will also begin the long-term recovery process at the same time.

Alcohol detox is the first step in the recovery process. Detoxing at home, under medical supervision, can be a safe and confidential method of beginning a new life of sobriety. But even at home, it’s critical that the alcohol detox process only be done under competent medical supervision.

Withdrawal, in essence is a group of symptoms that happens upon the sudden discontinuation or decrease in intake of a substance (nicotine, caffeine, medications, recreational drugs or alcohol). In order to experience symptoms of withdrawal, there must first be an established physical (or chemical) dependency to a substance. Alcoholics who are in the process quitting are susceptible to experience alcohol withdrawal (AW). Symptoms range from something so minor like insomnia and tremulousness to severe complications such as withdrawal seizures and delirium. Withdrawal symptoms set in within 8 to 10 hours of their last drink. This course of action is suggested to those dealing with outpatient treatments of mild alcohol withdrawal.

Fight the urge to drink: Some alcoholics do not experience withdrawal symptoms after their last drink. Symptoms set in when they abstain for a few days and resume drinking again. Stay away from people, places or occasions that will put you in a situation that will require you to drink or will make it difficult for you to say no to a drink.

Stay naturally hydrated: Drink a lot of water and fluids with electrolytes, such as Pedialyte or Gatorade. It will keep the body hydrated and will replenish the essential fluids that have been lost in the consumption of alcohol. Sometimes, electrolytes may need to be administered intra-veinously especially to those who are experiencing symptoms on a regular basis.

Monitor blood pressure: Blood pressure may rise if one is going through alcohol withdrawal. Should the blood pressure go higher than 115/75, one should get immediate medical attention. Medications may be needed to cut keep the blood pressure as close to normal as possible.

Take multivitamins daily: Taking multivitamins can minimize the irritating effects of withdrawal. Since alcohol robs the body of necessary nutrients, multivitamins will take care of replacing it.

Treatments are meant to nurse immediate withdrawal symptoms and prevent complications. It should be the start of a long-term therapy to support abstaining from alcohol. Some treatments may involve placing the person in a medical facility for close monitoring while some mild to moderate cases of alcohol withdrawal can be done through out-patient methods. Consult a doctor, a health professional or an alcoholic expert for more treatment options.

An excess of alcohol can have very different results from moderate consumption as we have observed at social gatherings. And a man can start drinking too much to any number of reasons. For instance he may be in the company of friends who habitually drink and this influences him to consume large amounts daily to the point of no return. The person may be mentally weak and unable to resist the pressures of life or cope with them or even think of alternatives and this may lead to a dependency on alcohol. Stresses, strains of a relationship gone awry may lead one to find solace in drink. Failure in business or social circles may lead to addiction. Whichever the approach all paths lead to one end condition: chronic alcoholism with all its side effects on the mind and body.

As a result of which alcoholism treatment centers do not follow a set pattern of treatment for all kinds of alcoholic addicts. The overall idea will by far be the same for any kind of approach. The degree of intensity of alcoholism varies from person to person. In some people the level of alcohol abuse may be extreme wherein any liberal approach will not help in any way.

Are Socio-economic Conditions Responsible for Alcoholism?

All alcoholism treatment centers try their utmost to find out the basic reason behind the habit of alcohol dependence. As has already been emphasized no one reason can be outlined for the basic cause and proliferation of the symptoms of alcoholism. It depends on a number of factors. Let us try to analyze these factors under the following broad headings:

Social Conditions: The hunger within every person to strive and achieve better than what he or she already has drives the person to reach unthinkable heights in their professional lives. When these expectations and hard work are not met with appreciation then there comes the side effect of ambition i.e. disappointment bringing along with it the vice of alcoholism. Along with this there is the effect of rejection met by individual either by some close friend or from someone special. Individual who are otherwise emotional in nature tend to get hurt badly and they find respite in alcohol. Before they know they become addicted to this poisonous liquid. Non-acceptance by the society because of their financial or family background also drives some people to alcohol abuse.

Economic Conditions: It is not uncommon to find that people from the lower economic strata of the society to be more addicted to alcohol than those from the higher strata of the financial circle. The scarcity of money to meet the day to day expenses as well as the need to have more money so as to feed their children drives them to do more of physical labor. At the end of the day due to sheer physical strain and mental unhappiness they sit with a bottle of alcohol. It does not take long to make this a habit. The effects of alcohol dependence are worse in these kinds of people because due to lack of money they drink any thing they can lay their hands on. After intoxication follows a series of physical and verbal abuse inflicted on the wives and children of these alcoholics by them. The decision to seek help from alcoholism treatment centers is the last resort they have when all other means fail to work out.

It completely depends on the approach of the alcoholism treatment centers to bring about a complete change in the personality and mental health of the addicted individuals along with improving their physical health.

Before beginning treatment at treatment centers experts analyze the addict thoroughly from all angles: physical and psychological and create a profile based on which they chart out the treatment process which will eradicate the negatives and instill positive thoughts and a will to live normally. Alcoholism treatment centers have a backbone of dedicated and committed as well as experienced and qualified staff who knows all about these conditions and have the capability to handle such cases effectively. So regardless of the kind and type of alcoholism a person may be afflicted with these centers can be trusted to effect a suitable treatment.

Alcohol withdrawal typically occurs when a person who has been drinking for a long duration or a person who drinks frequently or drinks heavily suddenly stops drinking. Not all who stop drinking suffer from alcohol withdrawal and some may even get away with mild and moderate symptoms that can be overcome with a healthy diet and sufficient doses of vitamins. It is the people who suffer from severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal who may require medical attention and sometimes hospitalization.

A frequent heavy drinker will suffer from withdrawal symptoms in about 6-10 hours post the last consumption of alcohol. These symptoms peak within 2 to 3 days of alcohol withdrawal and last for more than a week. Symptoms may also become aggravated if the person suffers from other medical disorders.

Mild to moderate symptoms include nervousness, anxiety, shakiness, fluctuations in emotions, lack of clarity in though, bad dreams, sweating, nausea sometimes accompanied with vomiting, insomnia and abnormality in the movement of eyes. The most common symptom of people suffering from severe alcohol withdrawal is DT or Delirium tremens where the person’s mental state is in chaos and confusion and the person also suffers from hallucinations. Other symptoms of severe alcohol withdrawal include seizures or convulsions and high body temperature.

If any of your acquaintances is a heavy drinker and has decided to go cold turkey, immediately bring it to the notice of his or her regular medical practitioner. Sometimes severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms can lead to other medical conditions that can even become life threatening. By bringing in the doctor, one can ensure there are no other complications. A person who has admitted to the hospital post alcohol withdrawal may have to stay for a few days under observation. The doctor may observe the patient for any alarming changes in his or her blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, body temperature and fluid levels. Sometimes, based on the physical conditions of the person suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms, medications are also given intravenously. The person is also thoroughly examined for diseases and disorders associated with consumption of alcohol such as liver, blood clots, heart, brain and nerve damage. There are many cases where the person suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms is not necessarily hospitalized but may be prescribed moderate doses of sedatives.

Apart from all the above physiological and psychological symptoms, the person suffering from alcohol withdrawal may also suffer from \”cravings\” for alcohol. This is normal as the body has been so accustomed to the consumption of alcohol, it demands more. It is finally the will and determination of the person and the support of the person’s family and friends that can strengthen his or her fight with the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

In the previous article; Living with an alcoholic – Shame, we talked about the shame and the secrecy that comes from living with an alcoholic and how it leads to isolation. In this article we will look at ways to start tackling and reducing the shame.

It is important to point out up front, that there are no quick and easy answers. Changes in the way we feel take time. This is doubly true if we are still living with the same issues that caused these feelings in the first place. However, if you work at it then it has been shown that around 75% of people who address the issue start to feel less depressed, more empowered and have increased self-esteem, so it does work and it is worth while.

It is also important to point out that these changes can be achieved in spite of your circumstances. Obviously it would be great if your alcoholic decided to get treatment, become abstinent and change his ways. However that may not happen some time soon, or even at all. So you can’t let your feelings depend on this hoped for change.

The first thing to do to change your feelings of shame is to step back from your drinker and his behaviour. You may know deep down that his behaviour is not your fault, that you are not responsible. However as we mentioned in the previous article, this is where the – but! – comes in. Your head tells you that it is nothing to do with you but nevertheless your emotions still seem to volunteer for the responsibility. It is not easy but keep telling yourself – I am not responsible, I am not responsible!

The second thing to do is to break out of the isolation that you have been creating for yourself. If you are invited somewhere, accept. Why should you not enjoy yourself and have a life? If the invitation is to you both and booze may be available you have a couple of choices. You can go alone and have a more relaxed time not having to worry about whether he will get drunk, make a fool of himself and ruin your evening. Alternately you can accept as a couple. However instead of your usual warning or pleading to not drink too much, you can try a different approach. Tell your alcoholic that he can drink as much or as little as he chooses, it is completely up to him. However you will not make any excuses for him neither will you take any responsibility for his behaviour. You can then go to the party and try and do exactly as you told him. This second strategy may take time to perfect and you may need the help and support of friends to achieve it. Also we do need to be realistic here. It is OK to admit to your friends that you are embarrassed for him. That is only being honest about your feelings, but that is not the same as making excuses for him as if it was somehow your fault.

The third thing is to stop covering for him. Don’t tell people he is unwell when he is drunk, tell them he is drunk. (Please note we are not saying this about his work situation. Being honest with your partner’s boss or work colleagues can cause far reaching consequences which must be carefully considered first.) Despite all your secrecy most of your friends will probably know about the drinking anyway. So let your friends into the situation. You may find that it is a relief to both of you that you can talk about it openly and they can be very helpful and supportive.

These are just a couple of the strategies that you can use to reduce the shame that comes from living with an alcoholic. The main thing is to break down the wall of secrecy and bring the problem out into the light. It may even be a benefit to the drinker as having nowhere left to hide he may have to admit and address his problem.

I’ve been depressed for quite some time now, and I would very much like to not be anymore.
I used to be the person who loves life more than anything else, and the one who counseled others on their problems. I’ve had depressing things happen to me. I’ve seen death on many occassions, and I’ve held dead children in my hands, but after Sept. 1st, I’ve done many many things that have led to a depression that I cannot fight my way out of.
On Sept. 1st, my girlfriend who I loved completely, and learned the true meaning of love, lost her father, leaving her bereft of most of her family. Her mother died when she was young, and most of her aunts and uncles passed away as well. Needless to say, it was a very hard time for her, and very hard for me as well, as I was unable to help her. She began to become distanced from the world, and from me as well, which began to break my heart, but I stayed strong for her, and to give her someone to depend on. However, she eventually told me that she no longer felt the same way about me, and wanted to take a break. Now that was devastating to me, but I still clung to the fact that at least I still had my beloved life to hold onto, my family, and a few close friends to confide in.
Well I began to do things that I greatly regret in an attempt to find something to fill the enormous gap in my life I now had. I drank even more excessively than I already did. I smoked weed for the first time ever, and did so twice. I lost all interest and motivation in college, and as such, my previously good grades plummeted. I betrayed family, and betrayed friends, and every time I did such things, my morale and depresion sank deeper, causing me to do even more things I greatly regret. I used people, and betrayed myself. I lost control of my rage, got into fights, and let loose my rage on people who didn’t deserve it. I distanced myself from family and friends, and even let my emotions affect my job in the Fire Department. I hurt many people, and lost sight of my future.
Now I know the loss of the woman I love in my life is the root cause of my depression, but it is not the MAIN cause of it. The actions I did after the fact are. I went from being the person who’s life was devoted to helping everyone else, to the person who hurts everyone else, and that fact I cannot live with.
Through my depression, I even considered giving up the one thing I held above all else: my life. I just would not consider doing it myself. I began to wish that bad things would happen to me, just so that I wouldn’t have to deal with everything else. I began to imagine myself being in car accidents, dying in fires, and having a bad reaction with medicine and alcohol which would cause me to at least lay in a hospital bed and see who cared enough to come visit. I began to not sleep, and I lost my will to live.
I am beyond all that now, yet my extreme loneliness augmented my depression still exists. I also still cannot sleep.
If you have motivated yourself to read through all of that, then maybe you know of a way to help me, or somewhere I can look for help. Any help on my above situation would be greatly appreciated.
so a few more details. after reading many of these answers, I realized that I left many things out.
1. (I might have included this, but I lack the motivation to check.) It is extremely hard for me to relax. My counselor has told me this, and has tried many things to help me relax, all of which have failed.
2. Megan (the girls name) is transferring to my school next semester, which has the potential to be disastrous.
3. Megan is seeing someone else now. She actually started seeing him 2 months after breaking up with me.
4. I don’t trust any medication that messes with my consciousness or mental facilities. It took me a while before I would trust myself taking nyquil. (When I did, I took excessive amounts, along with many other night time drugs, along with tylenol PM, benedryl, and some alcohol to wash it all down in attempt at relaxation) None of these helped me sleep, but they did make me quite unsteady in the morning…

Dealing with a panic attack is not the easiest thing in the world. To top it off, it is something that a lot of people have to live with. Thus, it can be important to know the answer to the following question; “What are the 5 best ways of dealing with a panic attack?” Although you may have your own ways of dealing with a panic attack, there are some things that seem to work for everyone. That means that you will always have something that you can do that can help you deal with a panic attack. Keep reading and find out 5 ways that can work for you.

Tip #1 For Dealing With A Panic Attack

Tip number one is a pretty common one, and that is to find a quiet place to be. Most of the time, when you are having a panic attack, you will notice that you have a million thoughts going through your head. On top of that, your heart is racing, and all the noise around you seems about 1000 times louder than what it really is. Thus, finding a quiet place where you can just sit back and relax for a second is always the best idea. Just take a little bit of time to regain control over yourself. This way you feel like you have control again.

Tip #2 For Dealing With A Panic Attack

The next tip has to do with the TV. Although this could sound kind of funny, Television is a great way to deal with a panic attack. However, you cannot just watch any kind of TV. You have to watch something that is going to have a positive message. One of the best things that you can watch is a kid’s show. Most of the time, they are bright and cheerful, and always have a positive outcome. This is going to put your mind in the right place. It is going to calm you down and help get you feeling better again.

Tip #3 For Dealing With A Panic Attack

If you cannot find a kid’s show, then follow this next tip. Find a TV show that is a sitcom. Something that is going to make you laugh and have a good time, anything that has a positive message to convey. Thus, family sitcoms are usually the best. Pretty much, the reasoning behind this is the same as the last step that we talked about. It is going to calm you down, and make you feel better about yourself. It is going to make you feel like you are in control again.

Tip #4 For Dealing With A Panic Attack

Step number four is something that a lot of people do not think about. Most of the time, a panic attack comes about because you feel like you are losing control. So doing something that puts you in control is a good way to go about handling your panic attack. Thus, go about your house, and do some chores or something that you have complete control over. This is going to make you feel good about yourself, and put the power back in your hands.

Tip #5 For Dealing With A Panic Attack

Last, but not least, when dealing with a panic attack, stay away from alcohol and smoking. You may not know this, but it is going to make all of your symptoms just that much worse. In fact, the alcohol can make you go from a panic feeling to a panicky depressed feeling, and that is one of the worst feelings you can have.

Teenage depression hits 5% of children and adolescents, as reported by experts. Teenage depression is serious and needs to be addressed when symptoms start to show. Unfortunately, it sometimes goes unnoticed and untreated because of a lack of understanding about the condition.

Adults may sometimes tend to attribute it to hormones or dismiss it as a case of the usual teenage mood swings and rebellious behavior; but if ignored or left untreated, teenage depression could result in a lasting state of depression and, in many cases, suicide. Cases of teenage depression are on the rise; and now more than ever, it’s important to fully understand what it is all about.

Teenage Depression Signs

It’s very important to be able to spot behavioral warning signs. Note that some mood changes are more extreme than most, and that one shouldn’t immediately jump to conclusions when trying to deal with a teenager’s emotions. Being observant and having the ability to differentiate between mood swings and negatively, destructive behavior is a key element in dealing with teenage depression.

What are the symptoms that indicate that a teenager is experiencing depression? A few telltale signs of this condition include:

•	long periods of irritability

•	feelings of hopelessness

•	loss of pleasure in one’s normal routine and activities

•	constant feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy

•	deteriorating performance in school

•	social isolation

•	excessive crying and feelings of sadness

•	physical and/or verbal aggression

•	suicidal thoughts

Depressed teenagers may also exhibit destructive behavior and use activities such as alcohol and drug abuse, as well as self-injury, as an outlet for their feelings.

Teenage Depression Causes

As mentioned earlier, peer pressure and parental expectations play a large part in a teenager’s feelings of self-worth and behavior. Once he feels that he is unable to keep up with all the expectations and live up to other people’s standards, this will cause him to doubt himself.

Young people also place a high premium on being accepted. When a teenager fails to fit in, this contributes to stronger feeling of inadequacy. After all, for many young people, being alone, different, and unpopular is a terrible thing.

Family problems can also give rise to teenage depression. Young people may harbor feelings of guilt and start questioning themselves, wondering if they somehow contributed to the problems, especially if they’re also the constant targets for criticism. They will start thinking that their presence at home is unnecessary and that everyone’s life will be better if they disappeared.

Performance in school is another trigger for teenage depression. With academics becoming more difficult at this age, teenagers may not be able to keep up with schoolwork as well as they used to, and would therefore experience failures from time to time.

Frustration with schoolwork, fear of disappointing parents, and dismay at one’s self can all lead to feelings of worthlessness. In Japan, for example, there was a time when suicide among students was on the rise, especially among those who performed poorly in school.

Teenage Depression Treatments

Clearly, teenage depression is not a joke and certainly not just the dramatic whimpering of young people. It’s a major problem that deserves the fullest attention of one’s friends and family.

That’s why it’s very important to be very supportive and attentive. Rather than being impatient with the young person’s behavior, parents in particular should pay careful attention and take the time to really understand what their children are going through. It would be a great help if they are able to convey to their child that he is loved and that he is a promising individual with lots of potential. Young people need encouragement and support to get through this difficult time in their lives.

Family and friends of a depressed teenager can also get help from counseling services and organizations that specifically deal with teenage depression. Some may also choose to enlist the help of professionals.

Coping with the issue of teenage depression is a daunting task for many, but the results are worthwhile once the teenager is able to overcome it. It will take a lot of time and effort for everyone involved and the important thing to do is to work hard and do everything possible to ensure that your child will find satisfaction and fulfillment in his teenage years.

Firstly, what is a panic attack? A commonly accepted definition of a panic attack is ‘an exaggeration of the body’s normal response to fear, stress or excitement’. 20% of the adult population have experienced a panic attack which if left untreated can become a more regular occurrence. Some people have one or two panic attacks and never experience another while others have attacks once a month or several times each week. Even the fear of anticipating the next attack can be quite overwhelming for most people.

Typical signs of a panic attack area pounding heart, profuse sweating, higher sensory alertness and thoughts racing through the head which can be brought on without warning during any daily activity. Other symptoms include a tingling sensation in the limbs and a feeling of faintness. All of these sensations are brought on by adrenalin flooding the body in response to a potentially threatening situation. Some people can get so panicked that they will admit themselves to the emergency room in the mistaken belief that they’re having a full blown cardiac arrest. In fact twenty five per cent of those people who are admitted to hospital for chest pains are experiencing panic attacks and not heart attacks. Panic attacks can come on very quickly and usually last for between five and 20 minutes.

One of the causes of panic attacks is chronic stress which can be caused by financial worries, loss of a job, or perhaps a divorce, but more generally through unresolved emotional issues. People can have a full blown panic attack because they have grown up with some type of emotional trauma which they have repressed and never really dealt with. The situation can be exasperated through lack of sleep and the use of drugs, nicotine and alcohol or a poor diet which is high in sugar and caffeine which can all contribute to feelings of anxiety.

Psychotherapy can also be just as important in treating panic disorders as medication. Mental therapy helps establish the irrational fears which can then be addressed with relaxation techniques. A combination of both medical and psychological treatment can ease anxiety and prevent panic attacks, together with proper lifestyle choices.

Panic attacks can affect both men and woman, but women are much more likely to seek help whereas men typically tend to internalize anxiety and stress and may even turn to alcohol in order feel more relaxed. Use of alcohol is not a long term effective treatment and can even lead to alcoholism.

If you do experience a panic attack the first thing to concentrate on is your breathing. When we’re anxious we tend to breathe more shallow which in turn leads to increase in heart rate. You should take deep breaths and try to relax. Longer term treatment should include therapy, medication and a healthier lifestyle. Follow the basics of self care with exercise and diet, and surround yourself with a support network that you can talk and discuss any issues, so that you don’t have to live in fear.
