What helps creative impulse in poetry?

Does anyone know if alcohol or drugs have an affect on poetry? I know things like depression do, but that just causes depressing poems. Someone told me Freddie Mercury used ecstacy as a creative stimulant. A lot of great poets and story writers(like Edgar Allen Poe) were also acloholics.

That’s like saying does jogging have an affect on poetry. It probably depends on the perosn. But just because lots of artists used drugs, doesn’t mean the drugs had anything to do with the art. They might have been better artists without the drugs. Also, before such things as meditation, creative visualization and freewriting–all pretty recent activities to enhance creativity–there weren’t as many choices to get oneself in the ‘writing zone.’
ah, the search for creativity steroids. why didn’t i think of that?
seriously, alcohol is a known depressant. it may side-line your inhibition for a while but it is not going to jack up your creativity. you either have it, or not. as for drugs, there are too many for me to comment upon, nor am i an expert. i think what it comes down to is that nobody will ever prove that the famous writers (like EAP) were more creative on their drug of choice. which leaves us to wonder if their addictions were romanticized and whether they could have produced far greater work if they weren’t negotiating a cerebral fog. imho.
well, as someone who smokes weed, ill tell ya it makes me write stuff that makes no sence and misspelt, alcohol? no, not me at least, i cant even pick a pencil up when drunk, not weakness, it makes me slothish…..but i hear acid and absinthe are great for impulsive thoughts and new percpective.
Sure, also Coleridge wrote Kubla Khan when he awoke from a dream caused by opium.
Creativity can come via so many sources. Imagination also helps, or powerful feelings…
Well abviously mood enhancers can effect writing, wether it improves them is yet to be seen though! The creative stimulant for me would be my love for writing thats all I need.
